Budget Cuts Looming for Year 2013

WASHINGTON—An unintended consequence of the Super Committee’s failure to cut the deficit is a temporary reprieve from what is to come—massive Medicare and Medicaid cuts for the poor and the elderly.
Pundits said recipients of the governmental programs were spared the knife because they feared losing re-election.
Many of them believed that it was better to take no action before the election than to risk losing the support of many voters.
Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) said that the big stumbling block in the Committee reaching an agreement was over extending tax cuts for the wealthy. Conversely, Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) disagreed, arguing for “greater fiscal responsibility.”
The hot issue of tax cuts and other budgetary reductions and the 2012 election still cloud the near future.
Medicare and Medicaid dodged cuts for the moment, but 2012 looms as a momentous year when a beleaguered Congress may write or rewrite new laws and a national election or a Supreme Court decision could change everything.
Automatic cuts starting with $1.2 trillion are supposed to take effect as of 2013, “which means it's possible for Congress after the 2012 election to return and make changes,” Harvard economist Robert Blendon told The Spiritual Herald.
